People Donate Because They are Asked

Today's post is part 3 of chapter 5 of my book, A Day of Hope: Leading Volunteers to Make a Difference in Your Community. I realize that some of these posts might not be exactly related to "leadership," but I believe they are relevant. Feel free to pass them on to someone you know who works at a nonprofit organization or church.


Many studies have been done on fundraising to discover what causes people to donate.  Do you know the number one reason people donate to an organization?

#1 Reason people donate to an organization: They were asked.

Here’s the flip side of the question.  Do you know why people don’t donate to an organization?

#1 Reason people don’t donate to an organization: They were not asked.

Make sure you are asking people to donate.  Don’t be scared.  Don’t chicken out.  Step up to the plate and ask for a donation.  You can’t control whether or not people will donate to your cause.  The only elements you can control are if you ask and how you ask.  You can control how you ask by asking in person, over the phone, or by mailing a letter.
