3 REASONS TO BUILD A TEAM

I believe I first heard the phrase “teamwork makes the dream work” from John Maxwell (in fact, he has a small book by the same title). Our president and CEO at United Way of Stanislaus County, Francine DiCiano often says a similar phrase, “It takes a village.” Meaning, it takes a village of people to achieve a goal together.

The fact is: to do great things, teamwork is required.

From my experience I believe there are three reasons to build a team.

  1. A team allows you to do what you do best so you can focus your time and energy where it can best be used. For me, my most productive thing is to think, dream, and lead. A team allows you to focus on what you do best, thus allowing you to contribute as much to the success as possible.
  2. A team lightens your work load which allows you to rest, relax, and thus perform better. One thing I am learning as I get older is the benefit of feeling mentally sharp and focused as a result of good sleep and time to relax. Since most of my work is “knowledge work” where I need to use my brain to produce content, I need to have rest in order to create good content. For example, when I was working on my undergraduate degree while working full-time, I would often attempt to take advantage of working late on Friday nights because I did not have to wake up early on Saturday morning for work. I quickly realized that the quality of school work I produced in the late hours of Friday night was extremely poor because I was tired both mentally and physically from working and doing school throughout the entire week. If I simply waited until Saturday morning after I had received a good night of rest, the work I produced was much better.
  3. A team compliments your weaknesses because it allows others to work in the areas you are weak, which hopefully are the areas which they are strong in. A couple years ago I organized a local leadership event at our church called the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Fortunately, I was able to build a team to help organize the event and make it successful. Building a team for the Leadercast allowed me to focus on the things which I was best at: networking with attendees and thanking the sponsors. If I was busy making coffee, preparing lunch, and doing IT work on the video feed it would not allowed me to network with attendees and sponsors to make sure they were having a good time. The bottom line is that when a team works in the area you are weak in, they will do a better job than you.

In the paragraphs above I shared with you the three reasons I believe it is good to build a team. Now, I am curious of your thoughts.
